Change afoot for National Electricity Market

July 24, 2019

The electricity market could be set for a shake-up after COAG Energy Council tasked the Energy Security Board (ESB) with developing advice for a long-term, fit-for-purpose market framework to support reliability, in March of this year.

With a deadline for recommendations set for the end of 2020, the energy sector is now debating what its future might look like.

Capitalising on the active dialogue taking place amongst industry professionals, Pitcher Partners Melbourne and the Australian Energy Council (AEC) recently hosted an informative networking evening to bring together those who work in the sector to discuss and consider changes to the design of the National Electricity Market (NEM).

The event was hosted by Pitcher Partners Client Director, Alastair Phillips, who has extensive experience working with utilities companies, and CEO of the AEC, Sarah McNamara. Panel guests included: Alex Cruickshank of Oakley Greenwood, Ben Skinner of the AEC and Professor Michael Brear from Melbourne University.

Key discussion points on the evening included the challenges facing the NEM, new forms of power generation at the edge of the grid and varying political views around integrating these, and methods of calculating and varying design for capacity remuneration (capacity markets).

Given the breadth and depth of issues impacting the NEM discussed at the event, it is clear that the Energy Security Board will have its hands full delivering its changes by the end of 2020.
