Welcome to the December 2023 Investment news.
Market returns across asset classes in 2023 were mixed. The US market powered ahead despite inflationary concerns, a banking crisis and the threat of a recession. However, the strong performance was driven by a very concentrated number of technology stocks. Locally, the Australian market produced a much more subdued result as banks struggled due to economic headwinds while the resources sector was impacted by a reality check in battery metal prices.
From a legislative perspective, 2023 saw the announcement of a new tax on superannuation balances of more than $3m which is likely to impact some of the strategic planning going forward. The Federal Government has also hinted at further reforms in the retirement income space in the year ahead.
