Perth investment news – April 2024

Welcome to the March 2024 Investment news.

Markets had a strong start to 2024, led earlier in the quarter by optimism over interest rate cuts and supported by a good business earnings season and resilient economic fundamentals. However, this optimism is being challenged with recently announced US inflation numbers higher than expected. This is reducing the potential size of interest rate cuts and delaying the timing of when US central bank is likely to act.

On the legislative front, the Government’s ‘Stage 3’ tax cuts will take effect on 1 July 2024 which will benefit all taxpayers, especially lower income earners. This will not only ease some of the cost of living pressures for many households but is also expected to provide a boost to the economy.

July 1 2024 will see the indexation of superannuation contribution limits. Specifically, the concessional contribution cap increases from $27,500 to $30,000 while the non-concessional cap moves from $110,000 to $120,000.
