Our practice areas
Business advisory and assurance

Business Advisory and Assurance is the largest practice group within Pitcher Partners Melbourne and focuses on providing assurance and business advisory services to a diverse range of clients across a broad section of industries, with a focus on small to medium public companies and privately owned businesses.

The client base is varied, including (but not limited to) property development and investment, financial services, retail/wholesale, not-for-profit, hospitality, education, health, infrastructure and asset management, technology and renewable energy.

Business advisory

 

Business advisory work can include assisting with tax planning and budgeting, forecasting, preparation of monthly management accounts, cash flow management, year-end reporting, income tax returns and activity statements.

General advice is also offered to enable boards of directors, audit committees and business owners to make informed business decisions and bring clarity to day-to-day operations.

Audit and assurance Audit and Assurance work typically involves audit planning where we gain an in depth understanding of the client’s business and systems, identification of areas of risk, testing of controls and transactions and preparation/review of financial statements.

Data mining tools are also utilised, such as Datasnipper and Mindbridge to ensure efforts are focused on testing what matters.

Outsourced finance The Outsourced Finance team is a specialist team within Business Advisory and Assurance that acts as our client’s finance function, providing end-to-end finance and administrative services. By working closely with our clients, they gain valuable insights into their businesses, allowing us to guide them through strategic decision-making and goal realisation.

Examples of services provided to clients include system implementation, set up and registration of a new company, bookkeeping, payroll, management accounting, financial reporting, debt compliance, cash flow management and financial modelling.

Funds management The Funds Management team is a specialist team within Business Advisory and Assurance that collaborates with bookkeepers, tax specialists, and clients to establish new managed investment trusts, structure investment activities, and manage businesses.

Their work includes management reporting, assisting with accounting ledger reconciliation, periodic and annual tax distribution calculations, managing a growing portfolio of fund unit registries, and working with technical tax advisors to deliver client-focused and commercial structuring solutions.

Technical standards The Technical Standards team is a specialist team within Business Advisory and Assurance that supports the broader Business Advisory and Assurance practice nationally, covering all areas, including Financial Assurance, Data Analytics (such as Mindbridge), and Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG).

The team utilises their technical expertise to develop methodologies and deliver training and support to practice staff. They also liaise with ASIC and industry bodies as needed.

 

Private business and family advisory

Private Business and Family Advisory work closely with privately run businesses, predominantly family businesses, entrepreneurs, and high net-worth individuals. The professional and experienced team in PBFA provide business owners and families with proactive advice and commercially relevant recommendations whilst servicing financial, taxation and compliance needs.

Service lines
Core business services Core business services work consists of monthly and quarterly reporting assistance, annual compliance, preparation of management accounting, financial statements, income tax returns and business activity statements.

Additional services offered include forecasting, budgeting and investment holding structuring, and use a range of software, including CaseWare, Xplan, Xero, MYOB and APS. The team also liaises with our offshore team.

Family office The Family Office team is a specialist team within Private Business and Family Advisory that work closely with the firm’s partners and clients to provide holistic family office guidance and advice. The team offers a market-leading service suite for managing family groups and their legacies.

They understand the needs of multi-generational family groups who trust the team to manage internal financial management and deliver reporting solutions with a long-term view in mind.

Work beyond daily financial support extends to estate planning, aged care and retirement planning, family governance, trustee and executor support, estate administration, and philanthropic/NFP services.

Partners services The Partner Services team is a specialist team within Private Business and Family Advisory that is responsible for providing the firm’s partners, retired partners and their extended families with a combination of accounting, advisory, and tax services.

Their work consists of year-end financial statements and tax returns, completing BAS/IAS, tax compliance, and year-end tax planning and their client base grows with the firm.

Self-managed superannuation

 

The Self-Managed Superannuation team is a specialist team within Private Business and Family Advisory that ensure our clients meet specific compliance requirements when preparing Annual Accounts and tax returns for Self-Managed Superannuation Funds.

The team also reviews Super Funds for potential contributions and pension opportunities. Within this team there is exposure to BGL 360, and Super Tax compliance software, and there may be opportunities to liaise with external Auditors and the internal Investment Advisory team.

Corporate affairs The Corporate Affairs team is a specialist team within Private Business and Family Advisory that work collaboratively across the firm and with clients. Their expertise ensures the accurate and timely preparation of crucial company secretarial documentation.

 

Tax operations The Tax Operations team is a specialist team within Private Business and Family Advisory that provides a tax lodgement service for all clients across the firm, handling a high volume of tax returns and a range of critical correspondence.

Working collaboratively across the firm, the team provides administrative support in managing the firm’s tax lodgement program, ensuring our clients’ ATO obligations are met.

Tax advisory

Our dynamic Tax Advisory Group is a team of highly qualified tax professionals who together deliver value adding tax advisory services to their clients, covering the complete tax spectrum, from individuals to multinational enterprises, with particular focus on the middle market sector of the Australian economy.

Work within the team is varied and may include preparing written tax advice, assisting clients on complex transactions, requesting private rulings from the revenue authorities (ATO and SRO) and tax compliance.

With longstanding institutional relationships with the ATO, this team is also able to advocate for effective tax legislation that benefits all its clients.

Technical excellence is maintained through regular tax technical training from the National Tax Group which is at the forefront of developing tax thought leadership and legislation. The team is therefore abreast of all the latest developments in tax including key legislative updates, recent cases, and ATO public rulings and practices, enabling the team to deliver comprehensive and timely advice to their clients.

Team members deal professionally and sensitively with various stakeholders, often in an aggrieved state.

Work within the Business Recovery and Insolvency team looks different each day. One day might have you actively involved in the trading of a company’s business, another day might have you attending Court and participating in legal proceedings issued by the liquidator or trustee. The team spend their time investigating corporate and personal misconduct and preparing reports to regulators and government officials alongside analysis of companies and individuals affairs, forensic analysis including tracing monies and assets.

Pitcher Partners Investment Services is a well-regarded investment advisory practice known for offering genuinely independent and conflict-free advice, particularly distinguishing itself from groups with ties to banks and brokers.

Pitcher Partners Investment Services serves a diverse clientele, including individuals, family groups, private companies, superannuation funds, not-for-profits, charitable trusts, and tertiary institutions.

The group is committed to transparency, simplicity in fees, and regular communication, ensuring clients are well-informed and confident in their investments. Additionally, the group and many of its advisors are certified by the Responsible Investment Association of Australasia, reflecting the group’s commitment to responsible investing.

The team’s work is varied and includes strategic wealth management advice, strategic asset allocation, portfolio construction, ongoing investment portfolio advice, retirement planning, and inter-generational personal and business succession. PPIS operates within a supportive team structure, featuring in-house research, compliance, and operations teams dedicated to maintaining high standards and a focus on client service.

Corporate finance

Corporate transactions are part of the progress towards a goal – be it growth, higher profitability, improved market share or competitive advantage. The Corporate Finance team provide independent, well-informed advice to public and private sector clients at board level on business transactions and the valuation of business assets.

Work in this team is focused on assisting business owners in the process of structuring a merger or acquisition, carrying out a due diligence, or a valuation for a business sale, restructure, purchase price allocation, dispute or for financial reporting purposes.

The team also assists clients by developing customised financial models and three-way budgeting tools to help clients understand the implications of financial decisions. These modelling skills are also used to help organisations develop pricing strategies to help respond to tenders.

The Digital team help clients address challenges with digital technologies. This team of consultants and analysts specialise in the nexus between business processes, applications and the underlying technology assets.

The team assist clients in planning and executing digital transformation with strategic advice, reviews, system procurements and implementation assistance.

Throughout each of these engagements, the team works at the intersection between business and technology and takes a highly commercial approach. This allows them to analyse the technical and business challenges in detail, then take a step back to formulate strategic advice and pragmatic recommendations.

Data & analytics The Data & Analytics team are skilled at mining, modelling and extracting valuable insights from data.

The team understand that the true value of analytics lies in its ability to solve business problems or unlock opportunities, so they work closely with clients to better understand your specific needs and challenges.

The team assists clients with data strategy, data engineering and warehousing, information management, business intelligence, advanced analytics and data science. In addition, the team offer payroll analysis/wage remediation services.

Through data labs, cross-functional teams develop and test solutions, planning pilots that add value and foster a forward-thinking approach. Once the pilot’s value is proven, the team designs, creates, and deploys production-ready solutions.

 

Practice management group

The Practice Management Group provides a range of services to support the firm’s client-facing practice groups, ensuring they have the infrastructure and resources necessary to deliver exceptional service to our clients.

The team comprises four streams: People Advisory & Operations, Learning & Development, Talent, and Employee Experience & Engagement.

Client experience

 

The Client Experience team is responsible for positioning the Pitcher Partners brand effectively in the middle market and delivering engaging and consistent experiences for clients. This is achieved through the delivery of insights, branding, communications, events and digital marketing.

 

IT services The focus of the I.T Services team is to enable automation and provide our internal clients with the best technology and applications, ensuring they can effectively support the firm’s clients’ needs.

The team comprises two streams: I.T Operations and Applications.

The team also collaborates closely with the Project Management Office on I.T-related projects.

Project management office

 

The Project Management Office standardises project-related governance processes and facilitates the sharing of resources, methodologies, tools, and techniques.

The team ensures projects align with the firm’s goals, provides oversight, and supports project managers by offering best practices, training, and centralised documentation. The team also tracks project performance, manages risks, and ensures consistent project delivery across the firm.

Finance & administration

 

The Finance & Administration team provides comprehensive support in various financial and administrative functions.

The team handles accounts payable, credit, payroll, timesheets, time and disbursement transfers, billing and WIP, concur, audit insurance, trust account, and group social budgets, ensuring smooth and efficient operations across the firm.

Risk & compliance The Risk & Compliance team is responsible for the day-to-day management, development, and testing of the firm’s various risk functions. This includes risk management, compliance, independence, and quality management across all practice areas of the firm, as well as supporting the national Network Firms.
