Steve is an Executive Director (Partner) with Pitcher Partners Perth, where he leads the Consultancy practice. He is a Chartered Accountant, Fellow CPA, Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA) and Fellow of The Tax Institute. He holds a Bachelor of Business (Actg) from Curtin University, a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from FINSIA, and MBA from Deakin University. He is a licensed public practitioner, registered tax and ASIC agent. Prior to joining Pitcher Partners, he was the founding partner of a chartered accounting firm, where he specialised in strategic planning, business optimisation, tax planning, corporate structures and compliance services.
Prior to public practice, Steve held a number of executive financial and commercial roles within tier-one organisations, including BHP, where he was Financial Controller. BHP, a dual listed company (DLC), trades through BHP Billiton Limited on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and BHP Billiton plc on the London Stock Exchange (LSE). As Financial Controller, Steve was accountable for management, tax and statutory reporting of the global iron ore assets. His broader responsibilities included corporate secretariat, business planning, budgeting, risk management and tenement administration.
With considerable experience in corporate governance, risk management, mergers, acquisitions and business improvement, Steve’s passion is to simplify work processes, leverage integrated technology and assist clients to sustainably execute their growth strategies.
In delivering large complex projects, Steve has quickly secured the necessary talent to support delivery, structure the organisation for success, and set clear objectives and accountabilities. Steve creates a safe work environment where team members are suitably empowered and recognised for their contribution.
Steve’s strengths are in his ability to articulate the end-state; link the commercial objectives to the technical delivery and effectively engage with stakeholders; address emerging issues promptly; manage risk and the impact of change; and ensure safety and value accretion remain imperative.
Steve was the BHP Iron Ore commercial due diligence lead on the $165bn attempted on-market acquisition of Rio Tinto, and the proposed $116bn iron ore Production Joint Venture that followed. He was due diligence lead on a number of other corporate transactions including the $735m HWE acquisition and $1.5bn Jimblebar joint venture extension with ITOCHU Corporation (ITOCHU) and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Mitsui). Between 2012-14 Steve was Project Director of the 1SAP program that focused on standardised processes, systems and performance transparency across the iron-ore functions and operational supply chain. From 2015, as a member of the BHP global Technology leadership team, he coordinated a number of initiatives as part of the BHP transformation and improvement program to enhance safety, unlock latent capacity and optimise asset performance.
